If we measured up all the snow we’ve experienced so far this winter in Central Ohio, I’m sure we’d be (at least) hip-deep or shoulder-deep (if you’re a kid). If you’re a parent … well, I’ll bet you’re ready for your very own private calamity day! Most likely, you burned through your bag of “cabin fever” activities long ago trying to entertain the kids.
Here are some family fun ideas that will help get you through to the (spring green) light at the end of the tunnel. Best of all, Gahanna is just minutes from some of the region’s top attractions! For hours, ticket pricing and additional info—visit the individual attraction websites.
- If you haven’t visited the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium during the winter, make it a priority this month and enjoy half-price admission through February 28! Some of the BEST exhibits at the #1 Zoo in the nation (USA Travel Guide) are indoors. Take the kids on a simulated Australian night hike to see nocturnal animals of Australia (one of my personal favs). Soak in the serenity of The Shores Region by coming eye-to-eye with West Indian Manatees at Manatee Coast, or by counting different types of tropical fish and sharks in the 100,000 gallon saltwater tank. Little ones will be mesmerized by slithering snakes in the Reptile building and entertained by giant polar bears at Polar Frontier. www.ColumbusZoo.org
- Not only are we lucky enough to have the #1 Zoo in the nation right here in Central Ohio, but also the #1 Science Center in the nation … COSI! Older kids AND adults can team up to enjoy some interactive crime solving at the new International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes (Feb. 8-September 1). Join Sherlock in uncovering clues and helping to solve a mystery using the powers of deduction and “cutting-edge” 19th century forensic science techniques. www.COSI.org
- Do you have a pint-size, aspiring chef at home? Young Chefs Academy Gahanna offers some awesome Fun Fridays cooking adventures based on a variety of themes. Young Emerils may learn to make Japanese Steakhouse favorites, Valentine’s Day foods or even take part in a Cupcake War!
- For some unique and inexpensive indoor family fun, play 18 exciting holes of mini-golf under a spectacular umbrella of black lights at Glow Putt Mini Golf in Gahanna! The safari themed indoor course is always glowing and a very pleasant 70 degrees. Best part: you’ll be able to see their little smiles glowing through the entire experience—which will provide TONS of fun and some great memories. http://www.glowputtohio.com/home.html
