Word is out: Gahanna is becoming known as more than just the Herb Capital of Ohio. It’s quickly gaining recognition as a great destination for craft beer lovers.
101 Beer Kitchen. The latest brew house to adopt Gahanna as its new home is 101 Beer Kitchen. Owners Thad and Jessica Kittrell launched their first 101BK location on the northwest side of Columbus about two years ago. That success soon had them seeking an ideal spot on the east side of town. That’s when they discovered the 5,000 sq. ft. storefront at 397 Stone Ridge Lane—which will open later this year.
“We chose Gahanna, and this location in particular, because in a sea of chains we wanted to bring some fresh local flair and an option for the young professional, family or empty nester who simply enjoys eating and learning about great food and beer to pair,” Jessica said. “Every 101BK staff member is passionate about our products and the education thereof and we are looking forward to bringing something different to the east side.”
In addition to the many great craft beers that patrons will find on tap at 101BK, all of the food is made from scratch. The menu changes quarterly, incorporating great seasonal flavors. A few signature items stay on the menu year-round (due to customer demand). Favorites include house-made pretzels (baked fresh, topped with sea salt and caraway and served with a beer cheese spread) and 101BK’s amazing tater tots—fresh potatoes, deep fried and topped with cheddar, pork croutons, Sriracha cream and scallions. “Sinful and delicious little nuggets of happiness,” according to Jessica.
Pigskin Brewing Company Central Ohio craft brew buffs are anxiously awaiting the September opening of new startup beer brewery, Pigskin Brewing Company at 81 Mill St. in Gahanna’s Creekside Entertainment District.
The sports/football themed brewery will feature a Taproom with many of Columbus’s best local beers, and will showcase several house recipes. According to the owners, “It will be the ideal spot to come watch the game, celebrate after a day of dominating work, or just to kick back and enjoy the high quality beer you deserve.” Fans will be able to wear their PBC devotion by purchasing authentic Pigskin gear.
Local Cantina, Signatures & More Currently, Gahanna offers several other nice spots to unwind with friends over a great beer and good food, including …
Creekside Local Cantina, (101 Mill St. at Creekside Plaza) offering a wide variety of craft beers, finely crafted tequila and hand crafted tacos (fish, chicken, beef, carnitas, BLT, shrimp, veggie & “truck style”). Check out Taco Tuesday (all tacos $2, all day) or a Happy Hour 4-7pm Monday-Friday.
Signatures Mill Stone Tavern, ( 94 Mill St.), a long-time local favorite, has recently become an even better place—thanks to new owners Tim Latorre and Corey Pearce. On nearly any given day, Signatures has at least 30 beers on tap—not to mention a variety of specialty shots and cocktails. (“Signatini,” anyone?) Add into the mix a nice menu featuring great pizza, wings, burgers and more; plus live music and a popular patio–and you have all the ingredients for a fun night out with friends. Check the Signatures website for event info including 80s Ladies Night Thursdays and other fun happenings.
So what does all this mean for Gahanna? We asked Cheryl Harrison, editor of Drink Up Columbus, for her take on it.
“It’s exciting to see Gahanna coming into its own as a craft beer destination,” she said. “With Dublin’s acclaimed 101BK and a brand new brewery joining established beer bars and events like the Gahanna BrewFest, Central Ohioans who love craft beer are sure to flock to Gahanna.”
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
