What has 45 points of interest, culinary inspiration, health and wellness indulgences, breathtaking gardens AND provides a celebration for the senses? Gahanna’s Herbal Trail! Launched in 2012, the Herbal Trail celebrates Gahanna’s designation as the “Herb Capital of Ohio” (named so in 1972, thanks to the perseverance of one little lady: Bunnie Geroux).
Every week, the Gahanna Convention & Visitors Bureau receives calls from visitors who want to “walk the Herbal Trail.” Now, technically this could be possible (although you’d be really tired, because there are many miles between all 45 attractions), but it’s best to customize an itinerary for yourself (or your group). Consider your time frame (i.e. one hour, an afternoon, all day?) and which stops appeal most to you. The fun combinations are limitless. Need some examples?
- Do you love to cook or consider yourself a die-hard Foodie? Take a day and eat your way through the Herbal Trail culinary gems. Start with the (award-winning) Basil Gimlet at Ciao Vino and the Steak Bruschetta (with chive oil). Wander over to The Wine Guy Bistro for a Margharita Flatbread Pizza, Grilled Beef Filet (topped with Herb Butter) and Herb Roasted Redskin Potatoes. Indulge in a lavender cupcake at Koko Tea Salon & Bakery for dessert.
- Are you an avid gardener? Tour the amazing Geroux Herb Garden with its Culinary Garden, Scented Garden, Shade Garden, Rock/Biblical Garden, Pond Garden and Medicinal Garden. Explore Gahanna’s Goosefoot and Sunrise Gardens. Then visit with herbalists for advice, workshops, tips and reading materials at the Ohio Herb Education Center.
- Treat yourself and your friends to some relaxation with a day devoted to wellness. Enjoy herbal massages, makeovers and some amazing wine cakes from Wyandotte Winery. Then wander the meditation trails at Shepherd’s Corner or take a yoga class.
These are just a few examples of Herbal Trail itineraries. Additionally, the Gahanna Convention & Visitors Bureau has a variety of experiences created specifically for groups. Need some cool ideas for VIP team-building activities for your corporate/meeting group? How about entertaining your bridal party, family reunion group or scout troop with a tour they wouldn’t be able to do on their own? Yep, we got that.
In 2013, the Visitors Bureau launched an ambitious marketing effort to attract Group Tours to Gahanna, based on … guess what? The Herbal Trail! And the result has paid off. In just a few short months, we’ve booked 10 tours to Ohio’s Herb Capital, coming from as far away as Missouri. Just last week, we hosted a group of 57 people who took part in our “Herbal Trailblazers” experience, visited the Ohio Herb Education Center, dined at our restaurants and visited a local farm. In addition to leaving with lots of Gahanna souvenirs, gifts and treats—the group went home with some wonderful memories of Gahanna, Ohio and the unique experiences they had here.
